It’s gotten warm enough for bare shoulders! I celebrated by treating myself to this off the shoulder blouse from Lion & Witch in Dallas. I loooove the way off the shoulder blouses look, but the trend this year is cropped off the shoulder, which I’m not as comfortable with. That’s why this one is perfect; it’s longer than most and looks great with jeans, pants, and skirts! It’s sheer, so you can either wear a cami underneath or go a little more daring by leaving it as is. (These adorable yellow pants are also from Lion & Witch. You can order either of these by calling the store or messaging them on social media.)
Moment of truth: I was eating pretty healthy and avoiding sweets for a while. I quit eating meat and was feeling better. But then I got sick a few times, and bad eating reared its ugly head. I have been trying to climb back out of the pit of bad habits and eat cleaner, drink more water, and keep healthier snacks on hand. Most friends know I am an avid gum chewer, and I didn’t realize just how unhealthy some of the gum and mints I use can be, too! But Simply Gum is helping me change that.
This information from the Simply Gum website shocked me: “The regular chewing gum you see on grocery store shelves is filled with artificial substances, including some of the same components used in the manufacture of car tires, plastic bottles, and white glue, as well as artificial sweeteners like aspartame. Consumers are kept in the dark about what they are chewing because the FDA allows conventional gum brands to hide up to 80 synthetic ingredients in the catch-all term “gum base” on the label. Although there are a few gum brands in the US market claiming to be “natural,” all of them include zdszdfzsfdszretsynthetics in their base.”
Wow. It was reading those statements that made me give Simply Gum a try, and I’m so glad I did. The gum doesn’t look or taste like what you’re used to. BUT- it freshens your breath and doesn’t fill your body with chemicals and artificial products. The flavors are unique: Fennel Licorice, Maple, Coffee, Mint, Cinnamon, and Ginger. (My favorites are Mint, Cinnamon, and Ginger.) You can find the gum at Whole Foods, Kroger, and The Vitamin Shoppe, and I recommend you give it a try!
Happy Friday, everyone! This week has been a blur…I’ve never worked such long days. The weekend can’t come soon enough! Here’s a peek at what went down this week:
Top Left: Last night was the annual Polish Fashion Show in Dallas, which is a fundraiser for the Polish organization. This is a fantastic group that blends professional women with faith and friendship, and I love everything it stands for. I walked in the fashion show last year, but this year I had the honor getting to emcee the event. In this pic, the crazy talented makeup artist Paige Anderson was transforming my face before the big event!
Bottom Left:Here is the beautiful braid that Anastasia created for me to wear for the show! Isn’t it lovely? She created this look in less than ten minutes, and I couldn’t have been more in love! I also got to wear this gorgeous Elaine Turner print dress and Kendra Scott necklace. They styled everyone beautifully…I can’t wait to share more pics soon.
Top Right: Check out my sushi-making skills! I learned from Chef Fuji at Five Sixty, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant this week. He taught me how to prepare the rice, create the inside of the roll, and then roll it up. My rolls turned out great, (much to my surprise), and I think I’ll make this a goal to do at home once a month.
Middle Right: Okay, this wasn’t from this week. But I took a snap of this hilarious bag at a store called ACME in Manhattan, Kansas a few weeks ago. I bought several goodies from this store and just had to share!
Bottom Right: Cue the fan! I wish I could be like Beyoncè and have a fan follow me around all day, but it’s only happened this one time. I did a shoot spoofing some of the Bravo shows, and they used a fan to give me the glammed up “housewife” look. It makes your hair look amazing, but you start to get really cold after a few minutes.
That’s all for this week! I’ll be back next week with more reviews and views.
I wear a lot of bright colors, so I don’t dress in all black very often. I’ve recently discovered the freedom that comes with wearing all black…it’s sophisticated, can look dressy even when you’re completely casual, and it’s easy to accessorize. This exact outfit became my uniform this weekend, which made getting dressed a snap! I added two of my go-to necklaces: my beloved monogram necklace from Miriam Merenfeld and my lucky horseshoe from Lilah V, which add a little sparkle to the look!
I’ve been traveling a bit on the weekends, and investing in a good backpack has been on my mind. As much as I love using my crossbody bag when I travel, sometimes I need something bigger to wear all day. (Especially if I’m buying souvenirs or need to carry snacks/water.) I found this Dolce Vita Carla Convertible backpack that is made of buttery soft leather and has cute stud detailing. It has two straps so you can wear it like a traditional backpack, and one strap on top if you want to hold it in your hard or sling it over one shoulder. It even has the perfect pocket inside for your phone! I love, love, love this backpack. It isn’t the utilitarian backpacks from high school; this is the updated, modern, and chic sister that still holds everything you need.
This weekend, my backpack was filled with hot weather essentials, so I kept my Kiehl’s Cactus Flower and Tibetan Ginseng Hydrating Mist close by. This stuff smells like paradise! I love this travel size, which is easy to pack and still flies in my carry-on. I don’t know if flying makes your skin dry like it does mine, but this little spray keeps skin hydrated even under dry conditions. It’s described as “a potent blend of Lavender, Geranium and Rosemary essential oils detoxify and protect skin from environmental aggressors.” Sign me up!
I also have a fondness for Kiehl’s Limited Edition Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. It also smells delicious, and part of a limited edition package for Earth Day! (The artwork on the lid was done by Gabrielle Reece and Laird Hamilton.)It’s the #1 customer favorite eye treatment, made with natural Avocado Oil. Besides being an incredible under eye moisturizer, this product does good elsewhere, too. 100% of net profits, up to $50,000, from the sale of this product will benefit Recycle Across America™.
Both these products are now my travel staples. What are yours?
It’s no secret I’m not a cook. I make two things: manicotti and chocolate chip cookies. Oh, and the occasional smoothie. But one thing I’ve come to love is creating a cheese board. Not only is it perfect (and popular!) for parties, it’s also fun to do for a romantic indoor picnic or something easy to make with kids. I’ve created a board like the one above but added a savory cheese souffle to create a delicious dinner, or visited Farmers Market for honeycomb, fresh apricots, and then added a variety of cheeses. The main thing you need for a successful cheese presentation? Something awesome and function to present it on!
I am smitten with this Uncommon Green State Slate, which is Made in the USA and quarried from Vermont. The slate is a great conversation piece, because it lets guests find out about the places you’ve been or where you’re from, or commemorates a special place for you and your significant other. This also makes an incredible gift for graduates, a going away present for a friend who is moving, or a housewarming gift. It’s large enough for appetizers or dessert displays. They retail for $65.
**To make my “everyday” cheese board, I added a few sweet, salty, and savory elements:
Walnuts, fresh strawberries, “everything” pretzel crisps, apple slices, muenster cheese, raw honey, coconut rolled dates, and a few squares of chocolate. You can add slices of bread, other cheeses, and some dried fruit to kick things up a notch. Make sure there is something for every palate!
I wanted to dedicate one post a month to my favorite things, so I figured what better time to start than the present. So, here we go….
First, this green botanical dress from Lion & Witch is one of my favorite things this month because it’s cute, comfortable, and has awesome details like the bell sleeves and lace up front. Plus, check out the cut-outs in the back! You can’t go wrong wearing this beauty. It’s up for order at the boutique, and you can contact them here. (You can also see it in action in a segment I did for Mother’s Day here.)
Next up: delicious goodies from Les Marquis Laudurée in Paris! One of my sweetest friends, Stephanie, just returned from a ten day trip to Paris, and she brought back some of the coolest souvenirs so I could have a little taste of Paris. I am already a huge fan of Laudurée macarons, so getting the chance to taste their beautiful chocolates was a real treat. First off, how cute are they?!? They are little pieces of art. It was tough to bite into them at first because they looked too pretty to eat! They each have a different filling, and I can safely say it’s the best chocolate I’ve ever had.
What would life be like without honey? Stephanie also brought me back some real French honey, which is also incredible. I use honey for everything; in my tea, on biscuits, on pita bread, or just straight out of the jar. French bees seem a little more sophisticated than the Americans ones, because this stuff is like a drug.
On a beauty note, my favorite beauty product so far this month is by far the Emjoi MicroPedi. I’d seen it advertised before, and I honestly didn’t think I really needed it. I figured my feet were soft enough, and I usually get a pedicure once a month where they scrub my feet. Boy, was I wrong. I DID need it. I gave it a try, and couldn’t believe how smooth my feet felt! I had no idea how rough they felt before using the MicroPedi. It takes about one minute each foot, and you’ll be amazed at how much dead skin (yuck) comes off your feet. Rough heels, the balls of your feet, and even the sides of your feet really benefit from this kind of exfoliation. You can read the reviews on Amazon for yourself, but trust me when I say, you need this. I didn’t realize how quickly this gadget could get rid of a callus. My feet look much prettier, and this thing does way more than you’ll get at your nail salon pedicure. You’ll thank me later for for this small purchase that gives you big results.
There you have it! A few favorite things for the month of May. What are yours? Hit me up on Instagram or Facebook!
